ARC Review - A Curse of Shadows and Ice by C.A. Maura

Thank you Social Butterfly PR for this ARC!

Title: A Curse of Shadows and Ice
Author: C.A. Maura
Genre: Fantasy Romance, Retelling
Series: Standalone
Pages: 294

Synopsis:

From USA Today Bestselling Author Catharina Maura comes a Beauty and the Beast retelling featuring a cursed emperor, a princess who possesses forbidden magic, and a marriage that could save them all.

Princess Arabella of Althea is left no choice when Felix Osiris, the Shadow Emperor, threatens to overthrow her country unless she agrees to marry him.

When she learns his empire is cursed and she’s destined to set them free, they come to an agreement: help him minimize the curse’s effect on his people, and he’ll let her go.

As Felix teaches Arabella how to control her forbidden and volatile magic, her feelings for him turn from hatred to passion… and she realizes that she must break the curse, or she’ll lose him forever.

Review & thoughts:

A Curse of Shadows and Ice is a standalone Beauty and the Beast retelling by C.A. Maura. It features a cursed emperor, a princess with forbidden magic and an enchanted palace that is more than it seems.

When emperor sets his eyes on Arabella’s small kingdom it is quickly decided that to stop him from from conquering it Arabella, the Crown Princess, must marry the Shadow Emperor. Despite initial reluctance, when Arabella learns of the curse plaguing her new home they come to an agreement: she will help lessen the curse’s effects and when he is satisfied with her efforts, she will be able to return home. But when it turns out Felix is not the monster everybody believes and he and Arabella get closer to each other, will they be able to break the curse and enjoy their new relationship before the curse destroys them all?

A Curse of Shadows and Ice is a quick read, it is less than 300 pages long and fast-paced, I read it in one sitting and it left me wanting more. Despite their rocky beginning (definitely enemies to lovers story), Arabella and Felix have a great relationship and I liked how she stood up to him and didn’t let him make decisions for her, she might not seem like that in the beginning but she is a strong FMC. Felix lost all hope for ever breaking the curse and it was beautiful to see how he slowly regained it with every day Arabella stayed in the palace. I loved how great they suited each other and really liked how their story ended.

I really enjoyed this Beauty and the Beast retelling, I think it might have been a little longer since I feel the ending was a bit rushed, but overall it is a really good story. Can’t wait for Elaine and Raphael’s story which was teased to come next!

When his father kidnaps Ellea, the Trickster Witch who gave him something worth living for, he has no choice but to return home. He must leave the comfort of his secluded life to journey to Hel—a path that is full of monsters, beasts, and terrible memories.

Nothing will stand in his way of saving Ellea—not his father, not Hel, and not the Gods. The funny thing is, he will be reminded once again that she never needed saving.

Ellea never saw herself stowed away in a castle, surrounded by the dead, sleeping Gods, and demons. While navigating her powers with her captor and newfound friend, she realizes that Hel itself needs work. She misses Ros every second they’re apart, but she can’t shake the feeling that she is exactly where she belongs.

Tricky Princess is a dark paranormal and mythological romance that contains detailed sex scenes, violence, swearing, and emotional trauma.

Review & thoughts:

Tricky Princess is the second book in Tricky Magic series by L.L. Campbell and holy shit, I loved book 1 but this sequel is even better!

Tricky Princess begins exactly where Tricky Magic ended, with Ellea in Hel and Ros being unable to get to her because of some magic keeping him out of Hel. Ros doesn’t have great memories about his time there and, understandably, is really worried about her and goes with his friends on a rescue mission… but Ellea once again proves how strong she is and shouldn’t be underestimated. She makes the whole realm her home and makes new friends (I laughed at Daddy Azzy so many times 😂). But our main characters have many enemies, both new and old, and will need to find each other so they can face them together.

This series has the most amazing characters! Ellea, Ros, Billy, Garm, Sam, Devon… I love them all, they are just one big happy family (love the found family trope and it’s amazing here) and I’m always so happy to read about them and all the trouble they always get themselves into. I must say even Azzy stole my heart in this book, all his scenes with Ellea and Ros were just perfect, I found myself laughing so many times but also crying, especially later in the book. Of course, we also see the relationship between Ellea and Ros grow and these two are as crazy but adorable as ever and, as always, the spicy scenes are *chef’s kiss*. Tricky Princess has not a single boring moment, there is so much action and some battle scenes, especially near the end. There is also quite a lot of politics, I loved seeing how everything in hell works.

I love this series, Tricky Princess is everything I hoped for in a sequel and even more! There isn’t a horrible cliffhanger (love you for it Lexi) but I so can’t wait for the next book in this series, I just know it’s going to be amazing!

Review - A Kingdom of Flame and Fury by Whitney Dean

Title: A Kingdom of Flame and Fury
Author: Whitney Dean
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Series: The Four Kingdoms  (book #1)
Pages: 547

Synopsis:

At ten years old, Raven was mysteriously willed to be the next ruler of Seolia, a kingdom nestled within the realm of The Four Kingdoms.

Orphaned as a baby, she has spent fifteen years ruling over a kingdom she believes she did not earn all while hiding secrets: she possesses dark magic and she thirsts for blood.

Now at almost twenty-five years old and with a sudden addiction to stealing life, Raven must fight through her new procured darkness to save her soul, but when a mysterious stranger arrives in her kingdom, she starts experiencing vivid dreams that detail who she truly is. As she slowly starts to unravel her story, what she uncovers at the end of the spool will change the course of her life and her kingdom forever.

Review & thoughts:

A Kingdom of Flame and Fury is the first book in The Four Kingdoms series by Whitney Dean. It is an Adult Dark Fantasy Romance story that I absolutely loved!

When she was 10, Raven was chosen as the next queen of Seolia and now, at 25, she still has no idea why. She is loved by her people but Raven has a secret: she has dark magic (and her magic must be one of the most unique ideas I’ve ever read about). One day a mysterious man comes to her from neighboring kingdom and they feel instant connection to each other, but that’s also when her closest advisor and childhood friend starts showing her he wants more than friendship from her. Torn between two man and having to deal with rumors about her dark magic circulating in her kingdom, Raven will have to make many hard decisions before she runs out of time.

This book is the epitome of expression “you can’t trust anyone”. There are just so many secrets and lies, while reading it I was constantly on the edge of my seat and was shocked every few pages, especially in the second part of the book. And when those secrets and lies come from the people closest to you… I’m in awe of how strong Raven is, she is a really great FMC and I loved how she grew throughout the book. She sometimes annoyed me (mainly with Cade) but in the end she is so badass and exactly the kind of FMC I love to read about, can’t wait for the rest of her story.

While I normally hate love triangles, this one didn’t really bother me and I think it was very well written. I loved Zeke since the first page he appeared on so I knew who I wanted Raven to end up with and really enjoyed their romance, they are amazing together and I really hope they will find a way to finally be together in the next book.

I really enjoyed this book and after THAT cliffhanger I can’t wait to read the next one. November can’t come soon enough!

Review & thoughts:

To Free the Rising Storm is the first book in The ReEmergence Chronicles by C.N. Maxwell, a NA Dark Fantasy Romance series with unique fantasy world, amazing characters and sweet romance that will leave you wanting more.

To Free the Rising Storm must have one of the most original worlds I’ve ever read about in fantasy books. After many years without magic it is now reemerging and many people find themselves with powers they never knew they possessed and can’t control. Our main character, Mae, was born with unnatural white hair and suffers from mysterious illness, and because of that, she is an outcast and even her family is wary of her. When due to a traumatic experience she finds out she has hidden magical abilities she needs to learn more about them and the only person who might have answers is Varys, son of her father’s nemesis and the man she’s felt connection to as long as she can remember. But Varys also has many secrets and with evil forces nearing their town will they figure out how to unlock and control Mae’s abilities before they run out of time?

I think my favorite part of this book is the character growth. We first meet Mae as a scared girl who is sheltered and can’t protect herself and it was truly amazing to see her grow into a young woman who stands up for herself and fights for what she wants. Varys also grew a lot as a character: in the beginning he is a shy librarian who doesn’t really put his heart into training with Leona and as the story progresses he gains confidence and decides to do everything in his power to help Mae. Their relationship was so incredibly built I couldn’t help but ship them and I honestly loved these two together, they were perfect for each other and quickly became one of my favorite bookish couples. Also, one of my favorite characters definitely is Leona, she is a loyal friend everyone would be lucky to have and often brought much needed comedic relief to the story.

I really enjoyed this book and after that cliffhanger the sequel can’t come soon enough. Can’t wait to read more about Mae, Varys and Leona!

ARC Review - The Maiden and the Unseen by Jeanette Rose and Alexis Rune

Thank you so much Rose & Star Publishing for this ARC!

Title: The Maiden and the Unseen
Author: Jeanette Rose and Alexis Rune
Genre: Fantasy Romance, Hades and Persephone retelling
Series: Love and Fate (book #1)
Pages: 431

Synopsis:

God of the Dead. King of the Underworld. The Unseen. The Renowned…
The Glorified Babysitter.
Zeus has finally decreed that the gods may leave Olympus and mingle - anonymously - with the mortals of the present. With zero warning or waiting for him to consent to this arrangement, Hades is placed in charge of not only helping the gods assimilate but also financing them. Unlike the other gods, Hades never withdrew from the mortal world. Instead he spent six months of every year among them, building a fortune befitting one of his many names. As long as the gods follow his strict rules for living among mortals, they have access to a generous monthly stipend. Break the rules, lose the privileges. No allowances. Ever.

Goddess of Spring. The Maiden. The Mistress. The Venerable One…
The Social Media Manager.
For the last two years, Persephone has lived among the mortals, enjoying everything the world she was so sheltered from has to offer. It took years of begging since Zeus’s decree to get her mother to allow her to go, and she imparted some strict rules to follow. Rule 1: No fraternizing with other gods. As far as Demeter is aware, Persephone’s closest friend is definitely not Helios, the Titan of the Sun. Rule 2 : No men. The mortal she’s casually dating doesn’t even know the gods exist. Rule 3: Every six months, Demeter comes by for a visit. This one Persephone can’t get out of, and if it keeps her mother from investigating Persephone’s life, what’s the harm?

Destiny. Fate. Fortune. Kismet…
An absolute bitch.
Fate has other ideas for Hades and Persephone, and it does not take lightly to being denied. Struggle and fight all they want. But the threads of destiny have wrapped tightly around them and tugs them tighter and tighter, no matter what the gods themselves have to say about it.

Review & thoughts:

The Maiden and the Unseen is the first book in the Love & Fate series and a modern day Hades & Persephone retelling. I was so excited to read this book after weeks of delicious teasers and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

When gods decide they are bored of Olympus, they come to live anonymously among mortals… and Hades becomes responsible for funding their luxurious lifestyles. When Persephone’s money disappear, she comes into Hades’ office to demand he gives them back… and leaves with a new job as his Social Media Manager. Hades doesn’t know what’s happening to him, but he can’t get Persephone out of his mind, and when it turns out she is his fated queen and the one connected to his curse, things are definitely going to get even more interesting.

This must be my new favorite Hades & Persephone retelling and since this is my favorite kind of retelling, I’ve read many of them. The Maiden and the Unseen has all my favorite elements of romance stories (kind of enemies-to-lovers/hate-to-love but more of a dislike to fiery attraction to love that I adored, office romance, badass FMC, possessive and lovable MMC, amazing spice) that put together make an incredible story that I couldn’t stop reading and just know I will reread many MANY times. I knew I would adore Hades since the first teaser but damn, this book made me really fall in love with him, he is just the perfect book boyfriend and treated Persephone like the queen she is. Persephone is really strong and I loved how she stood up for herself, didn’t take anyone’s shit and when she knew what she wanted she just went for it. And when she and Hades finally gave in to their attraction, the spice was 🔥🔥.

The Maiden and the Unseen is a really good Hades & Persephone retelling with amazing romance and some spice that I totally recommend to all Romance and Fantasy Romance lovers. Now, let’s talk about that ending… that cliffhanger is brutal and I still can’t believe that’s how this book ended, I need to know what happens next NOW! Really can’t wait for the next book, hope the authors won’t make us wait long because I’m dying to know what happens next!

ARC Review - Princess and the Player by Ilsa Madden-Mills

Thank you so much Montlake for this ARC!

Title: Princess and the Player
Author: Ilsa Madden-Mills
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Strangers in Love (book #2)
Pages: ---

Synopsis:

A masquerade ball brings together an NFL player and a penniless princess in this smart and sexy romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills.

Level-headed Francesca Lane never thought she’d miss her own wedding. But when her fiancé betrays her, she puts on her wedding dress and ditches the altar for a masquerade ball—at a sex club.

There, she meets NFL star Tuck Avery, dressed as a prince and hiding behind a mask as he celebrates his birthday. For one night, Francesca and Tuck indulge in a wickedly incognito affair. No names. No strings. And the masks don’t come off.

Unfortunately, Francesca soon realizes her prince is the wealthy jock who lives in the penthouse of her apartment building. His hobbies include parties and supermodels—or so the tabloids say. Another shallow jerk is the last thing Francesca needs, so she vows to keep Tuck from recognizing her, not that she’s his type anyway.

But fate has a teeny-tiny trick up her sleeve… a plus sign on a pregnancy test. Can this tormented prince accept love, or will he push his princess away forever?

Princess and the Player is a complete stand-alone romance with nuanced characters and a swoony happily ever after.

Review & thoughts:

Princess and the Player is the second book in the Strangers in Love series by Lisa Madden-Mills (but it can be read as a standalone). I adored Tuck since we first met him in Beauty and the Baller and his story is even better than I hoped for!

Francesca and Tuck meet for the first time during a masquerade party in a sex club. Neither of them went there for a one night stand, but as soon as they meet they are attracted to each other and soon decide to spend one unforgettable night together. A few months later they meet again and it’s really like fate when it turns out they actually live in the same building. But pretty soon everything will change because Francesca is pregnant… and Tuck absolutely doesn’t want children. Will these two be able to get their happy ending?

I was so happy when I learned Tuck would get his own book, he was one of my favorite characters in Beauty and the Baller and here we learn so much more about the amazing man he is. Both he and Francesca didn’t have it easy in their lives but I loved how strong they were and how they fought for their dreams. Their romance is my favorite part of this book, it was amazing to see how they slowly started to trust each other, open up about their past and how they supported each other, these two have such a beautiful relationship.

I really enjoyed reading Princess and the Player and I’m so glad I had the chance to read it early. If you liked Beauty and the Baller you will definitely love this book too, and if you didn’t, you should absolutely check it out, I’m sure you won’t regret it!

Blog Tour & ARC Review - My Grumpy Billionaire by Nadia Lee

Welcome to my stop for blog tour of My Grumpy Billionaire by Nadia Lee!

My Grumpy Billionaire, an all-new must-read romantic comedy full of heat and laughs from New York Times bestselling author Nadia Lee is available now!

My ex won’t accept that it’s over. He showed up at my divorce-cation in New Orleans at a masquerade ball. Lucky for me, a tall, debonair man in a mask rescued me and swept me away. It. Was. Phenomenal. And yeah, I had a one-night stand. And I’d do it again.

Back in the real world, the ex persists. And while I’m a woman who believes in saving herself, I was relieved when his sexy colleague Griffin jumped in and implied that we were dating to get the jerk to bug off. Of course, now we have to pretend to be dating.

Griffin is the least likely match for me. He’s grumpy and serious. But very. VERY. Hot. And he reminds me of a certain man I met in New Orleans…

Now I’m not sure if we’re faking it, or if the feelings are real, but I see that Griffin is nothing like I thought. And even though he doesn’t want to chat about pleasure augmentation devices with me, he knows how to use them.

But where there’s silicone, there’s scandal. What I didn’t anticipate was that Griffin’s got some scandals of his own.

Review

My Grumpy Billionaire is a new romantic comedy from Nadia Lee and while it can be read as a standalone, it is about Emmett’s brother from Baby for the Bosshole and it was so great to see all the Lasker brothers again!

Sierra is a CEO of a company that produces sex toys and Griffin is a college professor and son of a famous movie producer and a supermodel. They first meet on a masquerade ball where Griffin saves Sierra from her stupid ex husband and their chemistry is so off the charts they have a one night stand. When they meet again a few weeks later they have no idea who each other is and let’s say this time it’s not a love at first sight. But when Griffin offers to pretend to be Sierra’s fake boyfriend and move in with her to protect her from her ex it doesn’t take long for them to give in to their attraction. But when their secrets come to light will these two be able to have their happy ending?

I really enjoyed this grumpy/sunshine romantic comedy, Griffin and Sierra were so perfect for each other I loved their every scene together. I really liked the crazy Lasker family from Baby for the Bosshole and was so happy to find out this book is about Griffin, I hope each brother will eventually get his own book. And when I say they are crazy I mean it, I was laughing so many times at their antics, Ted and Joey were absolutely hilarious. The side characters were also great, I would love to have Ellie as a friend and all Sierra’s coworkers were fantastic. But my favorite part was definitely the romance, I just loved Griffin and Sierra and hope we will get to see more of them in the next Nadia’s books. Already can’t wait for what she writes next!

Excerpt

The guest room Sierra takes me to after dinner faces the master bedroom. The only thing separating us is the hall. And the doors, of course.

It makes sense. If her ex-husband decides to break into the place, I’ll be right here. I don’t think he’s quite that deranged, but then, I didn’t think he had it in him to show up at Sierra’s place drunk, so anything’s possible.

“This is the biggest room, other than mine,” she says, gesturing me in. “You have your own bathroom. It has a tub and a separate shower stall. Fully stocked with body wash and shampoo. I can give you conditioner if you need it. Towels are in there, too. If you need anything else, let me know. You can explore the rest of the house later. There isn’t much except for three rooms on this floor, downstairs, which you already saw, and the basement which you can look at tomorrow. Mi casa es su casa and all that.”

“Okay.” I stop at the sight of the bed. It’s king-size, which is fine, but… “Pink sheets?”

She looks at them. “Fuchsia.”

“Pink.”

“No. They’re fuchsia. Very different. And brand new. Nobody’s ever slept on the bed or the sheets,” she adds, like somehow that makes it better.

It doesn’t. And for some reason, this room, too, smells like apple. Like her.

“Did you spray the place with air freshener?” I ask, breathing shallowly. I’m going to become positively Pavlovian over this damn scent.

She frowns. “I don’t use air freshener. Why? Are you allergic to something in the room? Are you having a reaction?”

She sounds almost too eager as she asks. Does she want me to keel over?

It is possible, I decide. A woman this chirpy and happy must have a dark side nobody knows about to counterbalance all that brightness.

“I have some antihistamine,” she offers, looking up at me helpfully. Like a puppy waiting to be praised. And loved.

My heart feels weird. F*ck. Me. I better not be having a heart attack in a house that smells like apple and a woman who’s driving me crazy with her smile.

“I’m not allergic,” I say, before she decides to order an EpiPen over the Internet. “I just thought the place smells…” Like you. Hot. Sexy. Fresh. Makes me horny. “Funky,” I say, blurting out the first antonym that snaps into my head for what I’ve been thinking.

She looks horrified. “Funky?” She walks around, sniffing. Finally, she stops at the foot of the bed. “I don’t smell anything except fabric softener.”

“You’ve been here for too long. Your nose becomes numb to the scent.” I’d rather drink bleach than tell her I’m feeling horny over the infernal apple scent.

“You’ve been here for a while too. So how come you can smell it?”

“An exceptional nose,” I tell her. “If I were a dog, I would’ve been a bloodhound.”

“Hmm.” She looks skeptical. “Well, if the smell bothers you that much, you can open the windows. Actually, let’s just do that right now. Air the room out a little.” She pushes the curtains—which are in a shade in between purple and pink—aside and opens the windows. “There. That should do it. Now, do you need anything else? Other than an air freshener?”

“No.”

“At least it’s just funky, not skunky,” she jokes.

Is that supposed to make me feel better?

“Good night. And thanks for staying here.” She flashes a sweet smile, then leaves.

The second she closes the door behind her, the room feels empty. I exhale, trying to gain a logical perspective on the situation. My own bedroom is twice as large as this one. There’s no reason to feel so…alone.

I brush my teeth, change into a pair of boxers and slide under the sheets, clicking the bedside lamp off. I put my nose in the sheets and inhale. She must use apple-scented fabric softener, because I can still smell that damned fruit. Just like her shampoo.

At least nothing here smells like silicone d*cks.

My mind doesn’t do pep talks very well.

Right now, I’d rather smell rubbery silicone. The smell of the apple is driving me crazy. I keep thinking about how Sierra looked yesterday in that dress that showed off the sensual lines of her arms and legs.

And was she wearing a bra when we were having dinner downstairs?

Cut that out, I order my unruly mind. There was nothing to see.

Only because the shirt was big. She probably wasn’t wearing a bra. If it were tighter, her nipples would’ve shown through the fabric.

Argh. I turn over and force myself to count sheep.

By the time I reach two hundred and thirty-seven, I give up. It’s no use. Every time I shift and my bare skin touches the sheets, my nerve endings prickle, and my blood heats. My d*ck is painfully hard.

No number of sheep is going to help that.

There’s supposedly this powdered aphrodisiac that’s absorbed through the skin. When you want to seduce somebody, you just find some way to get it on the other person’s body.

Noah told me that after spending some time in a Southeast Asian jungle. He likes to talk about all sorts of asinine things he’s seen and heard after trips he takes to photograph wildlife. There’s no way there’s powdered aphrodisiac sprinkled on the sheets.

Then why are you hard for no reason?

I sigh and run a hand over the sheets. Nothing.

Could be super-fine powder…

I bury my face in the sheets and inhale. If there’s powder, I’ll cough.

But nope. Nothing. I can breathe fine.

However, powdered aphrodisiac or no, the fact that I have a throbbing erection doesn’t change. I know I’m not getting any sleep until I do something about it.

The solution is simple. Jerk off real fast, then roll over and go to sleep. I’ve done it many times before. Just not in a girl’s room that smells like apple p*rn.

I push a hand under the sheets, fist my shaft and move up and down mechanically, the way I always do when I need a quick release.

The expected pleasure builds, but it’s flat. There’s no buildup, no swelling that’s going to push me over the edge. Now it’s worse because my d*ck’s harder, pulsing rapidly, but it isn’t going to let me come.

I raise my head off the pillow and glare at my d*ck in the dark. Just how picky are you?

My p*nis stays silent, but it twitches once. It feels like, F*ck you.

Bastard.

I drop my head back on the pillow and close my eyes, hand still around my c*ck. It shows no sign of settling down. The scent of apple is stronger, and my crotch is throbbing so badly, it’s painful.

Although I’ve been resisting the idea, I know exactly what I need.
