Review - Court of Vipers by Jacqueline Pawl

Title: Court of Vipers
Author: Jacqueline Pawl
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Series: Lady of Innislee (book #1)
Pages: 539

Synopsis:

"We are enemies by necessity, not by desire. You are my perfect torture, and I would have it no other way."

Riona Nevis has been a pawn in her uncle's court all her life. The moment she was born, her future was decided for her: when she came of age, she would marry the man her uncle chose and secure her kingdom a valuable political alliance. She obeyed once, and it nearly cost her life. Now that she has escaped Beltharos's cutthroat court, she will not allow anything—or anyone—to tear her from her home again.

Prince Auberon is the infamous second son of the Erdurian Emperor. He is cunning, charming, wicked, and ruthless. When the Crown Prince is invited to bid for Riona’s hand in marriage, Auberon accompanies his brother into the heart of Rivosa with two missions: secure the betrothal, and uncover a secret that could end the decades-long war between their countries.

Auberon will stop at nothing to help his brother win Lady Riona’s hand. Riona will do anything to avoid an arranged marriage. But when a high-ranking courtier is found murdered, they are forced into a shaky alliance that could change both their countries for the better…or destroy them completely.

Review & thoughts:

The Court of Vipers is a first book in a new Fantasy Romance series by Jacqueline Pawl and OMG this book is so good! I was hooked on it since the first page.

Riona is a niece of a king and must marry to secure a political alliance with a foreign country. The royal family invites three suitors from different countries to discuss treaties and so Riona can get to know her future husband. Auberon is a second prince and needs to help his brother secure Riona as his bride and bring peace to their country. But despite being enemies, since their first meeting Riona and Auberon feel attracted to each other and when it turns out there is a murderer on the loose they need to work together to prevent war between their two kingdoms.

At first I was a little confused because I didn’t realize there was a time jump to the past from the second chapter but it was such a great idea to see what happened to the characters to make them become who they are in the first chapter. Riona and Auberon stole my heart and the author did such a great job with the forbidden love trope, I could really feel their struggles and couldn’t help but ship them together. Also, the political maneuvering is top-notch, I usually don’t much care for it in books but here I was really invested into who will benefit most from the treaties and who the real villain is. And the ending was amazing, so much happened and I was so not expecting those plot twists, and that last chapter… I really can’t wait to see what happens next!
