Thank you so much Jessica S. Taylor and BOMM for this ARC!
Synopsis:
“It’s frightful bad luck to have a woman aboard.”
Brigid knew the superstition, but when her father tried to marry her off, she had no choice but to stowaway on a ship bound for Bhodheas. When she’s discovered and discarded, her fate seems sealed…until she’s saved by the ocean and its queen.
Transformed into a syren and given new life, Brigid now has the power to seek revenge on those who wronged her.
Caelum has spent his entire life trying to help those who couldn’t help themselves. After years suffering the cruelty of his pirate father, saving others from a similar fate was ingrained in him. But when he’s unable to save a young girl from being thrown overboard for hiding away, he’s devastated.
Until one day, when he’s thrown into the water by unforeseen forces, he comes face to face with the past, and maybe, with his future.
But there’s a darkness lurking on the seas they both call home. And Caelum and Brigid have no idea just how intertwined their stories really are.
Review & thoughts:
The Syren’s Mutiny is Jessica‘s debut novel and the first book in her New Adult Fantasy Romance duology. It’s a refreshing take on the pirate/siren story and had me hooked since the first page!
After being thrown overboard Brigid became a syren, serving her queen and killing sailors with other syrens. When she is asked to kill the one man who tried to save her years ago, Brigid decides to help him instead, which results in grave consequences to her. Unable to return home, Brigid joins Caelum and his crew on their mission, during which she learns secrets about syrens and humans that will change her world forever.
OMG guys, this book is so good! Brigid is my favorite kind of FMC: badass, stubborn, not afraid to say what she thinks and more than a little stabby. She goes through amazing journey here, learning how to be a human again and I honestly loved everything about her and, of course, her relationship with Caelum. They had a slow burn romance, but you could see their attraction since the moment they met and it was so worth the wait when they finally got together. Caelum is the perfect book boyfriend and that’s all I’m going to say for now, everyone should meet him for themselves. And I really liked the members of his crew and how loyal and good friends they were, hope to see even more of them and their banter in the next book.
I also really enjoyed how the syrens were portrayed here, it was really unique and I can’t remember when I last enjoyed a book about them so much. The author created a really interesting world and I can’t wait to return to it when the next book comes out.
The Syren’s Mutiny is a really good fantasy romance book and I can’t believe it’s the author’s debut, it is so well written and I didn’t find a single thing I didn’t like about it. Also, that ending almost gave me a heart attack, there is a really good cliffhanger and I’m dying to read the next part of this amazing story!
