ARC Review - The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent

Thank you so much Carissa Broadbent for this ARC!

Title: The Serpent and the Wings of Night
Author: Carissa Broadbent
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Series: Crowns of Nyaxia (book #1)
Pages: ---

Synopsis:

Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always – always – guard your heart.

The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.

But winning won’t be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival.

Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her father’s crown… and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him.

But there’s no room for compassion in the Kejari. War for the House of Night brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home. And Raihn may understand her more than anyone – but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall, in a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love.

Review & thoughts:

Oh. My. Gods. Carissa Broadbent did it again! I mean I really shouldn’t be surprised but if you thought The War of Lost Hearts was Carissa’s best you so aren’t ready for this masterpiece. The Serpent and the Wings of Night is the first book in the new Fantasy Romance series by Carissa Broadbent and let me tell you I am still in awe of how brilliant it was, I finished it at 2 a.m. and am still thinking about THAT ending.

Oraya is the adopted daughter of a vampire king and living amongst bloodthirsty vampires makes her hate that she is, as she calls herself, a “weak” human. To become more powerful she decides to participate in a bloody vampire tournament where the winner is granted a boon by the goddess Nyaxia. Oraya reluctantly partners up with two vampires, Raihn and Mische, but when more and more contestants lose their lives and some events make her question her father, the vampires and even her own life, her growing feelings for Raihn and friendship with Mische make everything even more complicated… because there can be only one winner.

Let me start by saying this book gave me major Hunger Games vibes but with vampires and it way written in such refreshing way I’m all for it. These vampires are bloodthirsty and even the best of them can’t always control themselves. The politics between the fractions were also interesting and I liked the idea that the main difference between each fraction was the kind of wings the vampires had (I think it’s the first time I read about vampires with wings and it was really great idea!).

Despite the amazing world, I think the strongest point of this book, like with all Carissa’s books, are the characters. They are all imperfect, they are often afraid, do not always make good decisions and that makes them relatable and so great to read about. The relationships between them were also very well portrayed, from the complicated relationship Oraya has with her adopted father, the growing friendship with Mische to the beautiful enemies to reluctant allies to friends to lovers romance with Raihn (I absolutely love this romance, they are now one of my favorite bookish couples!).

And now let’s talk about that ending… the whole book was fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat but those last 15% were a real rollercoaster, I cried, then I was really shocked, then furious and then I cried some more because damn, Carissa really doesn’t spare our hearts in this book, I guess I should have learn that by now (but I still love her!).

The Serpent and the Wings of Night is a really incredible Fantasy Romance story and if you haven’t yet you should definitely preorder it, Carissa never disappoints with her books. I already can’t wait for the sequel, I know it’s going to be epic!

ARC Review - Anthesis by Lauren Elizabeth

Thank you so much Lauren Elizabeth for this ARC!

Title: Anthesis
Author: Lauren Elizabeth
Genre: Dark Fantasy Romance
Series: Anthesis (book #1)
Pages: 333

Synopsis:

Anthesis is the dark, alluring and tragic tale of the sirens who were cursed to kill for eternity.

As an immortal siren, Aglasia grapples with her body’s desire to enchant, kill and feed on men, all while pretending to be human. When the chaotic and secretive siren Rossa forces herself into Aglasia’s life, she reveals she needs help to transform a man into a siren. And though Aglasia has always craved solitude, she finds herself fascinated by this nomad and lends a hand.

But when the risks associated with creating such a powerful creature become life-threatening to Aglasia, Rossa and the innocent man who has become involved, Aglasia must uncover the truth of her past to save those she’s grown to care for, all while resisting her darkest desires.

Review & thoughts:

Anthesis is a new dark fantasy romance book and Lauren Elizabeth‘s debut novel. I still can’t believe this is the author’s debut, it is very well written and I really enjoyed this amazing story!

Aglasia is a siren, she needs to literally eat men to survive and after each “meal” she struggles with terrible guilt. She lives alone and pretends to be human, but one day another siren, Rossa, forces herself into Aglasia’s life. Rossa is Aglasia’s total opposite and they argue and fight constantly, but when Rossa reveals the real reason she came to her, Aglasia reluctantly agrees to help and that’s where the real action begins.

First of all, I really liked the idea of sirens living in the modern world and it was fascinating to read the mentions about their struggles to survive and blend in during different times in their 2000+ years of life (I would have liked to know even more!). And when I say it’s a dark fantasy I mean it’s really dark, the author is not sugarcoating sirens’ dining habits and fight scenes.

Aglasia is a great main character and the friendship unfolding between her and Rossa was so beautiful, the way she went from being always alone and not wanting to feel anything to enjoying Rossa’s company and admitting she had feelings and wanted some company in her life made me emotional, she really grew as a character. When it comes to romance, I was surprised to learn who the love interest is and didn’t care about him in the beginning, but he also grew as a character and I ended up enjoying his and Aglasia’s cute romance, it was a slow burn and I hope to see more of them in the next books.

I really enjoyed reading Anthesis, it is a great story with incredible characters and the book is fast paced, I couldn’t stop reading and finished it in one sitting. If you like dark fantasy romance you will definitely enjoy reading this one.

ARC Review - To Wake a Kingdom by Nisha J. Tuli

Thank you so much Nisha J. Tuli for this ARC!

Title: To Wake a Kingdom
Author: Nisha J. Tuli
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Series: Curse of Thorne (book #1)
Pages: 400

Synopsis:

After 100 years, I awake not to true love’s kiss, but to a blade at my throat.

Enchanted into an eternal slumber to escape an evil fae, Thorne is awakened, not by true love’s kiss, but by a man with a sword at her throat. So she does the only thing a princess can do—nails him in the balls and sticks him with a dagger.

But something has gone wrong because now her entire family isn’t waking up and Ronan, a warrior from an enemy kingdom, arrives on her doorstep seeking answers she doesn’t want to give.

Bent on revenge, the evil fae returns to claim the princess and kill everyone asleep in the castle. So Thorne strikes a bargain—thirty days to break the curse or Thorne becomes her property forever. But Thorne has no idea how to break a hundred-year-old spell that’s gone awry.

As time ticks away and she scrambles for a solution, her feelings for Ronan become entwined in her fate. Now she must find a way to protect her heart, save herself, and rescue everyone she’s ever loved.

To Wake a Kingdom is the first book in a duology. There is no cliff-hanger at the end of book one, and it can be enjoyed on its own.

Review & thoughts:

To Wake a Kingdom by Nisha J. Tuli is definitely my new favorite Sleeping Beauty retelling!

After sleeping for 100 years our main character, Princess Thorne, wakes up to a blade at her throat and a strange man hovering over her.

„I screamed and did the only thing that made sense—lifted my knee and drove it between his legs with every ounce of strength I had. ”

That’s when I knew I was going to love this book and it did not disappoint me. Thorne found herself in a very unexpected and difficult situation but she and her faery companion, Kianna, fought with everything they had to break the curse and free the sleeping people in the castle. When a few soldiers from an enemy kingdom find the castle and need to stay for a few days, Thorne soon finds herself drawn to the mysterious commander Ronan who teaches her to fight and treats her like an equal and not the delicate princess. But when the curse still remains and the time to break it runs out, how will everyone get their happy ending?

This Sleeping Beauty retelling is unlike any I have ever read. I loved how it deviated slightly from the original story and became a fast paced and full of plot twists I really did not expect. The first half of the book is a bit slower and focuses more on trying to break the curse and the romance between Thorne and Ronan, but the second half was absolutely insane. There were so many plot twist I had no idea where the story is going, each time I thought I knew what was going to happen the author proved me wrong every single time. And the romance became even more beautiful and steamy, Thorne and Ronan are now one of my favorite bookish couples.

I am very grateful for this ARC, this story is incredible and I was constantly on the edge of my seat while reading it. And while, thankfully, there is no cliffhanger, I can’t wait for the sequel!

Review - The One Who Loves You by Pippa Grant

Thank you so much Montlake and Netgalley for a copy of this book!

Title: The One Who Loves You
Author: Pippa Grant
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Series: Tickled Pink (book #1)
Pages: 397

Synopsis:

If the Upper East Side had an evil twin, it would be Tickled Pink, Wisconsin. This run-down, backwoods town isn’t worthy of the footprint of my Louboutins, never mind all of me.

But when my grandmother has a near-death experience and realizes we Lightlys can’t buy our way into heaven, she relocates the family to Tickled Pink to work on improving our souls. And that’s how I trade my heiress existence for gigantic bugs, dishwater coffee, and a cranky single dad named Teague Miller.

Teague spends his days fishing, raising his spunky teenager, and after an unfortunate incident involving cheese curds, living rent-free in my head. The one thing he and I can agree on is that I don’t belong here. He’s willing to help me escape—until the unexpected happens.

I kind of like him. I might even more than like him.

But am I ready to give up the life I adored for a man I love to hate?

Review & thoughts:

The One Who Loves Me is a new romantic comedy by Pippa that I really enjoyed!

Phoebe is a Lightly, her whole family is extremely rich and privileged. When Phoebe’s grandma almost dies she decides the whole family should learn how to become better people so they can go to heaven. She makes all Lightly family move to a little town called Tickled Pink and start living without maids, chauffeurs and WiFi. But not all locals are happy with having to tolerate Lightlys in their beloved town and the one complaining the most is our MMC, Teague. Let’s just say Teague and Phoebe’s first meeting doesn’t go well but they soon bond over their mutual desire to get the Tickled Pink rid of all Lightlys. That’s how begins their swoon worthy romance but when it turns out Teague has some carefully hidden secrets will their new relationship survive or will Phoebe go back to her privileged life in New York?

I loved all the great pranks local people were concocting for the members of the Lightly family, I was laughing so many times at all the shenanigans. Phoebe and Teague made a really great couple (it’s an enemies to lovers story which is my favorite!) and after a bumpy start they had a beautiful romance. I adored all local people and even the Lightly family members become quite lovable in time (and definitely the funniest! Grandma Lightly makes the most hilarious “villain”, I laughed in every scene with her).

The One Who Loves Me is a great romantic comedy and a really great summer read. Can’t wait for Tavi’s book coming in December!

Review - The Redo by Max Monroe

Title: The Redo
Author: Max Monroe
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Series: Winslow Brothers (book #4)
Pages: 571

Synopsis:

Put a finger down if you’ve ever been a single woman who got stuck in a New York City elevator in the middle of a summer blackout with your former high school sweetheart—whom you haven’t seen in years—while pregnant with a baby that isn’t biologically yours. And you can’t believe how handsome that blast from your past is, so you unwittingly flirt with him a little even though your life is so crazy complicated you’re barely keeping your head above water, but everything about him makes you think you could totally still be in love with him.

*puts a finger down*

What? Just me?

Needless to say, my current status is thorny. And no, I didn’t miss how close that word is to another one.

Even though he’s the epitome of tall, dark, and incredibly handsome, Remington Winslow has been a single bachelor for most of his life. It’s clichรฉd and basic—until you consider the fact that once upon a terrible time, he got left at the altar.

He doesn’t do relationships. He definitely doesn’t fall in love.

And I’m just trying to survive a tangled web of unexpected motherhood and running one of the top real estate firms in the city that never sleeps.

He’s the jaded guy who doesn’t want to settle down, and I’m the career-focused woman with more baggage than a 747 can hold.

We’re just two friends who used to be in love.

Now, if someone would tell my hormones I’m not a teenager anymore, I’d be set.

Review & thoughts:

The Redo is an absolutely hilarious new rom-com by the amazing Max Monroe and now I can officially say that Remy is my favorite Winslow brother!

When Remy visits his brother he definitely doesn’t expect to get stuck in an elevator with his high school sweetheart he hadn’t seen in over 20 years. He and Maria instantly reconnect and their old feelings resurface. When they get stuck in elevator again few weeks later… well, I guess we can agree it’s fate and they are meant to be together (and I will never look at elevators the same, LOL).

I knew I would love Remy‘s story since we first met him back in Winnie’s book but Max and Monroe really outdid themselves this time, Remy and Maria are so amazing together and I loved their family dynamics with little Izzy who was so adorable. It was also really fun seeing all the old characters again, Thatch, Wes, Winnie, Lexie, all Winslow brothers and many more are as hilarious as ever and I really missed them, I guess it’s time to reread again because Max and Monroe simply write the best characters, you can always count on having great time with each their book.

I really enjoyed The Redo, I was waiting for a long time for Remy’s story and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Now that all Winslow brothers got their stories I can’t wait to see what the authors write next (and I already know it’s going to be incredible!). 100% recommend The Redo and all Max Monroe books if you haven’t read them yet!

Keep reading for a look inside The Redo!

My fingers run across the screen quickly, and I don’t even bother looking up before stepping inside the elevator—and bumping right into another human.

He grunts as he catches my momentum by the tops of my arms, and I nearly jump into another dimension.

“Oh my gosh!” I cry, embarrassed by my rudeness. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention at all.” Honestly, I’m still kind of not as I finish typing a message to my worthless assistant, but once I hit send, I tuck my phone into my purse, ready to give him my full attention.

Or, at least, as much as my mortification will allow.

I cringe and look up into crystalline-blue eyes then, just as a smile is curling onto the handsome stranger’s face. But it only takes a millisecond for me to realize he isn’t a stranger at all. Truth be told, he’s as little a stranger as a man can be—my first real love and the man I gave my virginity to when I was sixteen years old. It seems like a lifetime ago and just yesterday all at once, but the memory of his gentle hands coaxing my nervous hips up to meet his is the kind of thing you don’t forget. No matter how many years have gone by.

“Maria?” he asks, his smile deepening further, if you can believe it.

Me, though? I’m nearly speechless. Because I haven’t seen my high school sweetheart Remington Winslow in two f*cking decades.

And yes, trust me, if you got an eyeful of everything that Remy is now, you’d know it absolutely deserves the use of the f-word. Same strong jaw, same intense eyes, same full lips and dark hair—somehow, he looks as good as I remember. Maybe even better.

Goodness, he’s aged well.

“Remy.” His name passes over my tongue and has the power to bring back so many memories of the past.

Is it true what they say about your first love?

 That you’ll always love them?

Review - A Curse of Blood & Stone by K. A. Tucker

Title: A Curse of Blood & Stone
Author: K. A. Tucker
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Series: Fate of Wrath & Flame (book #2)
Pages: 485

Synopsis:

“I do not know how to love you and be a good king to my people.”

From jewelry thief to interloper to queen-in-waiting, Romeria flees Cirilea a traitor to all. But the yawning distance between her and Zander troubles her more than any king’s bounty on her head. While Zander may have escaped by her side, he seeks to regain his throne, and no immortal will ever welcome her as Islor’s queen. She fears it won’t be long before Zander abandons her as everyone else she’s ever loved has.

Zander sacrificed his crown to save Romeria’s life, yet he dreads what her existence means for the future of his realm. As Ybaris’s plan to destroy Islor unfurls, a more insidious threat, orchestrated by rival fates, lurks beneath the surface. He can offer his allies no honest explanation for why he protects the Ybarisan princess and takes counsel from Queen Neilina’s caster, leading those closest to doubt his wisdom—and his allegiance.

As their company aims for the Venhorn Mountains, steered by prophecy, Romeria is desperate to wield her newfound abilities to undo Princess Romeria’s treachery before the kingdom tears itself apart. But with the mortal rebellion swelling, bolstered by the gift of Ybaris’s poison, it may already be too late.

From internationally bestselling author K.A. Tucker comes the second novel in her Fate and Flame series, an adult fantasy story that should be read in series order.

Review & thoughts:

A Curse of Blood & Stone is the second book in Fate of Wrath & Flame New Adult Fantasy Romance series by K. A. Tucker and it is such a great continuation I might love this book even more than the first one!

This book starts exactly where the first one ended with Zander no longer a king and him and Romy escaping the city with their companions. Now that all the secrets between them were exposed their relationship is strained and becomes even more so when it becomes clear their goals are different: Zander wants to gather his loyal soldiers and try to find a way to get back his throne while Romy needs to learn to control her abilities with the help of the caster and the seer. And with that begins a compelling, fast paced story with incredible characters and beautiful (and steamy ๐Ÿ”ฅ) romance I could not put down.

I was a bit annoyed at Zander’s treatment of Romeria in the first part of the book but he quickly redeemed himself and I simply adore them together, they make such a cute couple. They banter, bicker quite a lot but when it is important they stand by and support each other and that’s what is most important, their relationship really grew in this book.

I also really liked the secondary characters, I’ve loved Elisaf since book 1, but here we meet Pan who is simply hilarious and Jarek, he is such a great character and I was laughing during every scene with him and Romy.

I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see what the author has planned next for Romy and Zander. Book 3 can’t come soon enough!

Review & thoughts:

Spring Guardians and Songbirds is the second book in The Auran Chronicles by the amazing Wendy Heiss. I really really tried to savour this book but it was absolutely incredible and I finished it in one sitting, always needed to know what happens next!

This book starts right where Winter Gods and Serpents, with Slowlin feeling betrayed by Killian and Isjord readying to attack. While trying to untangle all the secrets and lies between them, our main characters need to start a fight against time trying to find the missing spectre pieces before Silas does and destroys the world as they know it. But will they be able to work together or will they let hatred destroy any chance they could have at happy ending?

I am in absolute awe of Wendy’s writing. Winter Gods and Serpents was one of my favorite 2021 reads and I’ve read it 3 times by now, couldn’t wait for the sequel. But OMG Spring Guardians and Songbirds exceeded all my expectations! The stakes are higher than ever and there is even more action, more sweet family moments and more of this beautiful romance!

After the end of the first book I knew things between Kilian and Snow wouldn’t be the same but damn, I wasn’t ready for this. I understood Snowlin’s feeling of being betrayed but I couldn’t stay mad for Kilian long, he was was so sweet and understanding, I was really rooting for them and wanted to finally see them happy. I was eagerly waiting for each their moment together, they are one of my favorite bookish couples and Kilian… he is the ultimate book husband and my heart was breaking for him through most of the book.

When it comes to the plot it’s just… wow. This book is insane, fast paced with so many plot twists and mindblowing revelations, enemies turned allies and dead turning up to be alive, there was not a single boring moment. And those last 100 pages is where things really got crazy, I cried constantly though them and Wendy how could you end this like that?! I’m sending you my therapy bill, I can’t believe this is the end and I need to wait for what happens next.

Spring Guardians and Songbirds is an amazing continuation to Winter Gods and Serpents, a perfect fantasy romance read. If you haven’t read the first book yet, what are you waiting for? Now I’m going to cry some more, that cliffhanger is so heartbreaking, can’t wait for the next book, I love this series so much!
